The project has been off-grid since the outset and a renewable energy system has been developed starting with a 12v system with old pv panels from CAT and reclaimed batteries from BT. It ran a single light bulb, except in winter! The system was further developed by incorporating a second-hand wind generator which was upgraded to 24v. This lit the light bulb even in winter! The addition of a 48v micro hydro; an inverter and latterly a large pv panel allows the running of power tools and a variety of gadgets.

All Diesel engines at the project are run on biodiesel from bio-power, a small company in Ayrshire that re-processes waste oil into fuel.
